Resignation Is the Cheap Item on the List

A minister who keeps his seat after at least sixty-nine dead in a high-speed collision.

That detail belongs on the table like an unpaid bill. A state Renfe train struck a stationary Iryo train near Urda while travelling between 160 and 200 kilometres an hour. A computer failure that morning stopped a group of trains, after which clearance to move again came without speed restrictions, a decision the minister later said defied explanation. The prime minister has said public trust in the high-speed network is broken after two similar tragedies within a year. Political rivals, a trade union and demonstrators have pressed Óscar Puente to leave. He says he conceals nothing, that his duty now is to resolve the problem rather than discuss his post, and that going would be the easy path the prime minister has not asked of him.

The offer on the political table is always the same. Remove the name. Clear the desk. Call it consequence. I find that offer thin.

An empty chair does not reduce the speed of the Renfe service that met the stationary train. It does not undo the morning computer failure. It does not rewrite the clearance given without restriction. Those are the facts that produced the dead. Departure leaves every one of them in place.

Yes, remaining after a toll this large can look like a man protecting his title, if one accepts the loudest version of the charge against him. Accept it and the proposed cure still fails. A vacancy does not restore the trust the prime minister has already declared broken. It only substitutes one arrangement of furniture for another.

If sixty-nine dead are treated as paid in full by a single resignation, the country learns a rotten lesson. The next failure arrives. The same product is sold again. Another exit. Another round of satisfied rivals. The clearance logic and the failure points stay where they were. Trust stays broken because repair was never what the transaction purchased.

Puente serves himself when he calls leaving easy. He also describes the product accurately. The easy product is the gesture that quiets a cycle of noise. The harder demand is that the person who still holds the brief answer for every step from the computer failure to the unrestricted movement to the impact at that speed. Hold the work of inquiry inside his tenure. Let every finding land while he remains the one who must respond. If fault appears, let action follow under the name that refused to go rather than after that name has already spent the credit of sacrifice.

Politics of status loves a clean sacrifice. It resembles a quick sale that leaves the underlying stock untouched. The collision was not a problem of appearance. It was a high-speed train driven into the back of a stopped one after a morning stoppage and a bad clearance. Weigh that sequence against the pleasure of a removed minister and the scales tip only one way.

The cost that matches the damage is repair under pressure, not an empty office. Keep him there until the sequence that killed sixty-nine is explained and changed. Keep him there until the broken trust has something solid to stand on again. The proper appraisal is not how fast a scalp can be taken. It is whether the network that produced this result is altered so the same path cannot be walked twice.

Resignation is the cheap item on the list. The only serious figure is the fixed network.
